What Is Search Intent in SEO?

Informational, commercial, transactional and navigational searches explained, and how to match your page to each.
Search intent describes what a person hopes to accomplish with a search. Matching your page to that intent is one of the most important parts of SEO.
The four main types
- Informational: looking for an explanation, such as "what is affiliate marketing".
- Commercial: comparing options, such as "best freelancing websites".
- Transactional: ready to act, such as "buy smart watch online Pakistan".
- Navigational: looking for a specific site, such as "MoneyEarn login".
Match the page format
A blog answering "what is affiliate marketing" should educate, while a comparison page helps readers evaluate programs, and a product page helps people buy. Do not force every keyword into a sales page.
How to identify intent
Search the keyword yourself and look at the results Google shows: guides, lists, product pages or videos. That shows what searchers expect.
Mixed intent
Some searches have more than one intent. A good page can answer the question and then offer a clear next step.
Set expectations
Clear intent alignment can improve usefulness, but it does not guarantee rankings.
Frequently asked questions
Why does search intent matter?
Pages that match what searchers want are more useful, so they keep visitors and tend to perform better.
Can one page target several intents?
Sometimes, but usually one main intent per page works best.
