Client Communication Tips for Freelancers

4 October 2026 1 min read

Good communication wins repeat clients. Simple habits for clear messages, handling revisions and dealing with difficult clients.

Many freelancers lose clients not because of poor work, but because of poor communication. Clients want to feel informed, understood and confident. These habits help.

Before the project

Ask questions until the requirements are clear: purpose, audience, examples they like, deadline and budget. Summarise the agreement in writing so both sides understand the scope.

During the project

Send short updates at agreed points, even if it is just "on track for Thursday". If there is a delay, tell the client early with a new date. Silence worries clients more than honest updates.

Writing clear messages

Use short sentences and simple English. Put the main point first. Use bullet points for options or questions. Read your message once before sending.

Handling revisions

Agree on the number of revisions in advance. When a client asks for changes, confirm what they want before working. If the request is outside the original scope, politely explain and offer a price.

Difficult clients

Stay calm and professional. Focus on facts and the agreement. If a client is abusive or asks for something against platform rules, use the platform's support or end the contract politely.

After delivery

Thank the client, ask if everything is as expected and request feedback. A short follow-up a few weeks later can lead to new work.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I update clients?

Agree on update points at the start, and always tell the client early if there is any delay.

What if a client asks for extra work?

Politely explain that the request is outside the agreed scope and offer a price or timeline for it.
